Antioxidants, Free Radicals, and Sports Nutrition

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 31st, 2010

As you know, I am a physician. It’s part of my profession to keep abreast of what’s happening in medical /health research. Being retired helps, because doctors simply do not generally have the “extra time” to devote to the scientific literature.

But I do. And I love it. I am one of those individuals who really enjoys …brace yourself…chemistry. When I’m done here, you should be excited too, especially if you are interested in sports nutrition and antioxidants, though not necessarily in that order.

Sports nutrition is a vast industry with emphasis on optimizing PERFORMANCE. Off hand, I can think of quite a few categories involving sports nutrition:

* sports nutrition and supplements for athletes,

* sports nutrition and athletic performance,

* sports nutrition and body building,

* sports nutrition and endurance training,

* sports nutrition and special diets in a variety of sports,

* sports nutrition and strength training,

* sports nutrition for running, jogging, walking, skiing, swimming

* There’s even Rocky Mountain sports nutrition

* …the list is endless.

So far, no surprises, huh? Well, here’s one for you. Did you know that when you exercise intensively you INCREASE the free radical burden in your body? If you’re a serious sports enthusiast, you should know that.

But…the real news is what science is now finding out about that free radical burden of yours. You should pay close attention here.

Suddenly, chemistry gets real personal.

Everyone of us has, what may be called, our antioxidant protective capacity. That means our bodies normally utilize antioxidants to protect us against the harmful impact of free radicals.

First of all, what are antioxidants? They are molecular substances which offset free radical damage to the body. Antioxidants, “quench” free radicals (for lack of a better metaphor) neutralizing their damaging effects on the cells of the body.

* Antioxidants are found in foods such as cranberries, green tea and even chocolate.

* Antioxidants are found in vitamins such vitamin C and E.

* Antioxidants are found in carotenoids such as beta-carotene.

* Antioxidants are found in many substances supplied by the body such as glutathione.

* Antioxidants are found in many herbs and enzymes.

The impact of antioxidants is boosted by glyconutrients to offset free radicals in your body…and, as a result of your athletic exertions.

Antioxidant capacity must be provided in your sports nutrition regimen or you could be “robbing Peter to pay Paul” with your workouts. As you will see, without a glyconutrional presence in your sports nutrition, the healthful gains made by your physical workouts will be offset by your own free radical burden.

Free radicals, sports and sports nutrition

Free radicals are those chemical species which contain one or more unpaired electrons, capable of independent existence. They form in the body due to a variety of reasons as offshoots of cellular activity or as products introduced to the body from the outside.

As an analogy, think of running a car engine as the cellular production and the car emissions a the free radical production. The engine produces products which cannot stay inside the car without further damage. They simply must be neutralized and expelled.

Free radicals form and cause damage by reacting with many substances in your body. It is estimated that upwards of 200,000 free radical attacks occur in our bodies daily.

When free radical damage is done, the body can remove the compounds formed by its cellular repair system. However, if the body cannot handle the free radicals (with antioxidants for example), nor remove the compounds, then disease can be the result.

Contrary to popular opinion, free radicals do not circulate throughout the body. The half-life of most free radicals varies in a range of a few nanoseconds to about 7 seconds duration. That means they will react within the “neighborhood” (a few Angstroms or microns near where the increase in free radicals occurred) …organs, connective tissue, circulatory or nerve tissue, bone or lymphatic material are all candidates for free radical attack.

Wherever they form, they will damage the surrounding areas, unless prevented by the body…So the body does NOT have the luxury of just filtering away any circulatory fluids to find the free radicals. The body’s defense systems must be…well…fairly omnipresent to neutralize the effects of free radicals. The antioxidant protective system must be healthy.

Since they are highly reactive substances, they react with all sorts of cell elements readily. But, when they do react with your body cells, they can damage the cells and even kill them. Often, the damage from free radicals can CHANGE the cellular structure enough to cause DISEASE such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and a host of others.

The type of disease that occurs is dependent upon which of the free radical defenses in the body weren’t functioning properly and where the free radical attacks occur.

The body has pretty sophisticated antioxidant defense systems. But, the body CAN get overwhelmed in its antioxidant protections against such free radicals…

Indeed, unless antioxidant enhanced sports nutrition (with glyconutrients) are used to offset the increased free radical burden, the BODY will suffer as a result of intensive sports training, stress, and competition.

Glyconutrients VITAL to sports nutrition …

Studies comparing marathon runners who did and did not take glyconutritional sports nutrition supplements were undertaken. The results were reported by the Proceedings of the Fisher Institute For Medical Research ( August 2003, vol. 3, no. 1). The results “demonstrated strikingly different patterns. ” Antioxidant protection appeared to be powerfully enhanced against free radicals with glyconutritional supplementation. Thus, the body was protected for several days after the marathon run.

However, when glyconutritional sports nutrition was NOT used, the damaging effects of the free radical burden appeared to remain in the body for about five days. Thus, the subject “consistently excreted higher concentrations of free radical byproducts…” as compared to that of the glyconutritional subject. It should be emphasized that the subject studied WAS TAKING other antioxidants, though not glyconutrition. Despite that fact, the above cited results were obtained.

That’s another way of saying that when glyconutritional supplements were not used, the free radical burden upon the body was not lifted. Antioxidant protection does appear to be (significantly) strengthened with glyconutritional sports nutrition. Such antioxidant protection appears to be of benefit for athletes overall, including training, stress, competition and dietary issues.

The glyconutrional revolution in sports nutrition and therapy is just beginning. More studies are being done. More results are coming in concerning free radicals and the capacity of the glyconutrients to boost antioxidant affect against free radicals.

Sports Betting Basics ? Why you Can Win at Sports Betting!

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 29th, 2010

The most profitable forms of what society classifies as “gambling” really aren’t gambling at all. Professionals do not consider themselves gamblers of their chosen profession, either do sports bettors or poker players. It is an investment.

I am a sports fan and my knowledge helps, but you don’t have to be. I am first and foremost an investor, earning a living from sports betting. In order to turn sports betting from a gamble to an investment the most critical factor is learning how the sports betting industry works.

Facts:

- the best team in sports will usually win

- line makers are very good at setting markets (lines, overs/unders)

If you do your research on the lines set and the results over the last few years you will be astonished at how accurate the forecasts are (trust me I have done it). Now for those new to sports betting you might be discouraged at these facts, however you shouldn’t be as it proves my next fact:

- THE OUTCOME OF SPORTING GAMES ARE NOT RANDOM

This is key to changing your perspective on sports betting as opposed to other forms. In reality it makes a professional sports bettor no different than your avid investor or stock broker, but rather than analysing corporations to predict performance, we analyse sports teams to predict performance. Now this is where things get really interesting, most people new to sports betting or those with a casual interest believe they are playing against the bookmaker or line maker. This is not true. The line maker’s are not posting a prediction of who will win and by how much when they set their lines. Rather they are trying to anticipate what the general public think in terms of who will win and by how much.

Why?

Well the bookmakers, like the professional gamblers, are in this as a business. They do not gamble either, and as a result generally their goal is not to gamble on the outcome, but split the public’s bets (as close to half on each side as possible). This way they earn profits by the juice they take on each bet. Thus the professional gambler and the book makers are pursuing two very different goals. These differences open up a great deal of opportunities for the sports bettor as they are not limited by the public opinion.

In essence – am educated sports bettor is actually playing against the casual sports bettors who set the public opinion. Once you realise this, consider who has the advantage:

- the casual sports bettor or fan who spends a few minutes each day keeping abreast of the sport; or

- the experienced & expert (full time) sports bettor?

EXACTLY.

How do you become an experienced and expert sports bettor? This is not an easy step, it takes time and effort. Our expert team at Cha-Ching has been doing this for a number of years. We have learnt all the strict rules surrounding the sports betting field and innovated our own. We crunch decades of data from our specified sports, which is used in combinations with other strategies to gauge the differences in public opinion what will actually happen. We are in effect “grinders”.

But you can do this too, with the Internet the information is more widely accessible than ever before (both information on expert sports betting and actual sport statistics). Alternatively you can pay for these services from others and make your living work free – however touting services are typically a scam so it is important to choose a reputable provider.

It is all out there for you to take advantage of, the only question now is, will you?

Sports Betting Rule for the NBA

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 29th, 2010

Sports betting is a very exciting and thrilling activity. Some sports bettors do it for entertainment, some for money, and others for both. Regardless of the motivation behind sports betting, certain basic rules should be within the knowledge of a sports bettor. A sports following provides the basics of sports betting such as the manner of these types of bets.

In placing a bet in the NBA, a sports bettor must be familiar with these types of rules for the NBA. The first thing to be considered is the objective of the sports bettor. The common objective of a sports bettor is to win money. This can be done by beating the oddsmakers. An oddsmaker is a person who sets the betting odds. It is different from the sportsbook. A sportsbook merely accepts sports bets unlike an oddsmaker that provides for the betting odds.

The next consideration in this type of betting rule for the NBA is to select a team in a game which one wants to bet on. A good choice of a team is based on statistics and news and not merely on favoritism. Certain conditions are given emphasis in selecting a team to bet on. Usually, the players, the team performance, and the opponent of the team are considered. The odds of winning are higher if a team has recognizable advantages over the opponent team. Usually an advantage of a team is found on the players list, the home court, and the revenge factor.

After selecting an NBA team, a sports bettor needs to determine the amount of a bet. The amount of the bet must be synchronized with the easy to follow system that a sports bettor adopts. This is an important aspect in order for a sports betting system to work. Otherwise, one will be subject to money losses if the financial resources available are inadequate to support a sports betting system.

The next consideration after selecting an NBA team is the type of bet that a sports bettor will select. There are various types of bets. A common type of bet is the straight or single bet. In this kind of bet, a sports bettor, will place the bet on a team that wins at a given odd. Another type of bet is the point spread. The point spread bet allows a sports bettor to bet on a team that won a given odd and at the underdog team. This type of bet will work in favor of the sports bettor if the bet on a team that won a given odd prevails.

The sports betting rule for the NBA is an important guideline in placing a bet. It should be complied with by every sports bettor in the NBA. It allows an efficient and organized system in placing a bet. A sports bettor should always follow a rule in placing bets. Otherwise, chaos and mismanagement might likely occur. One can also consider hiring professionals in placing bat. Professionals will be the ones who will comply with the sports betting rule based on what is advantageous to the client.

Is There a Future in Unusual Sports Jobs?

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 27th, 2010

If you tell someone that you are looking for sports jobs to apply for, the traditional positions may come to mind (including work as professional athletes and sports instructors. ) But how about if you are eyeing unusual sports jobs instead? Can you name even 5 types of unusual sports jobs that are known by the average American?

Here are some sports jobs that came up through research:

1. Administrator of a Sports Organization – Don’t think that the people who are responsible for organizing sports clubs and leagues are left out in the cold simply because they are not the athletes. Actually, being an administrator of a Sports Organization is quite a demanding job that requires patience and dedication because you need to organize sub-groups within the Organization to work cohesively with one another. And sports organizations are like other organizations in that they have their own brand of internal politics. If you have great people skills, then you might be qualified for this.

2. Athletes of unusual Olympic sports – some sports that fall under this category are Olympic ballet, race walking and…trampoline? Well, these sports were introduced in the Athens 2004 Olympics though it remains to be seen if they will be included in future Olympiads as well.

3. Another of the unusual sports (not necessarily classified as an Olympic-grade sport) is competitive hot air ballooning. In this sport, you may not need to be physically fit but you do have to get a license to operate a hot air balloon. Some events in hot air ballooning competitions are races (dubbed tasks) such as the Hare and Hound Task, and the Fly In task. This is one sport where gender is not a factor.

4. Foxhunting is another unusual sport where women can compete equally with men, mainly because it is the horse that does the running and the rider is just along for the ride. Too bad for the fox, but great fun for the riders and horses who have a keen sense for the hunt. One risk though is that riders can fall and break something, especially when the hunt gets fast and furious. If you want to help in foxhunting, you can care for the horses before and after the hunt.

5. Sepak takraw may be considered unusual by people from the West but is one sport that has been around for centuries in Asia. It is like a combination of gymnastics, volleyball and soccer where players vault a small ball made of woven rattan into the air and over the net into the side of the opposing team – where hopefully it will fall so they can score a point. A game of sepak takraw should be seen to be believed, since hands and arms are not allowed to touch the ball. You can only loft the ball into the air with your legs and feet, over a net which is around as tall as the player. Talk about agility. Athletes for sepak takraw do not come along very often, so they certainly qualify as an unusual sports job.

The future of unusual sports jobs such as those mentioned here rests on whether enough people want to hire the people who take part in the unusual sports jobs. More power to them then.

How To Stay Healthy With Sports Fitness

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 26th, 2010

When you talk about sports fitness, what comes first in your mind? It is, basically, the different sports activities, right? This is because sports fitness has always been referred to as the sports itself.

Generally, sports entail physical activities that are usually carried out for some recreational functions such as self-satisfaction, entertainment, competition, etc. It uses physical activity that is why most fitness experts regard sports as one way of staying fit and healthy. It can also be considered as one way of physical fitness; the only difference is that sports fitness is more inclined to the development of skill or ability.

However, like physical fitness, sports fitness is also capable of toning down the body fats of a person. Because of its rigid and strict health program, a sports enthusiast is able to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle in order to cope up with the strenuous demands of sports.

In sports, people should learn how to value their health. Otherwise, they can never endure the kind of energy that is required when playing sports activities.

Therefore, for people who are into sports fitness, here are some tips that you could use in order to stay healthy and be active on whatever sports you want to pursue:

1. Drinks Lots of Water

Humans can survive days, or even months without food, but they can never last a day without water.

Water is, indeed, the most important element needed by the body. Excessive perspiration, without any means of replenishing the lost fluids will result to serious health problems, and even death. Therefore, for people who are into strenuous exercises and trainings, it is best to always drink lots of water.

However, for sports enthusiasts, water may not be enough to replace the kind of fluid lost. Hence, it would be better if they would have sports drinks instead. Aside from the fluid, sports drinks have tow additional important ingredients needed by a person who is into sports fitness: carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Electrolytes are usually lost during strenuous physical activity, and this can only be replaced through sports drinks. Carbohydrates, on the other hand, are also needed by the body during rigid workouts to provide more energy so that the body can cope up to the demands of the activity.

2. More Veggies

People who are into sports fitness require more intakes of vegetables and fruits. This is because the body is craving for more vitamins and mineral supplements. It makes the body stronger and healthier enabling it to cope up with demands of the activity.

3. Calcium Intake

People who are into sports fitness should have calcium present on their diet. This is to provide stronger bones to the body.

Since the body is more exposed to greater physical activities, it is important to have stronger bones in order to avoid fractures or certain bone diseases like osteoporosis.

Calcium can be found in different vitamin and mineral supplements. They are also abundant in foods like sardines, tofu, dairy products, etc.

4. Warm Exercises

Warm exercises are always important before any kind of strenuous activities. This kind of activity is needed in order not to strain the body. Hence, before playing the sports that you have always love, it is best to do some warm-up exercises first.

Indeed, engaging into sports activities is one great way of being physically fit. The best thing about it is that in sports, you get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Massage ? One Form of Necessary Sports Jobs?

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 23rd, 2010

We know that not everyone has the physical and mental talents needed to become a professional athlete. So what’s the next best thing? Why, sports jobs that constantly bring you into contact with professional athletes, of course. And one of the most necessary of sports jobs is being a massage therapist for professional athletes.

Why become a massage therapist?

Though it does not carry the same prestige that a professional athlete may enjoy, being a sports massage therapist is still an important job that no sports team can do without. No serious professional athlete can survive the rigors of regular sports competition if he lacks the services of a good sports massage therapist.

Why is sports massage needed by athletes?

A sports massage therapist can aid athletes who are going through overcompensation and adaptation. Simply put, overcompensation is when the athlete has recently undergone stress overload (a usual occurrence in regular training and sports competition proper) so he overcompensates so that he will be prepared for the same or higher level of stress in the future. Adaptation is when the athlete is specially trained in coping with a certain type of stress. For example, a sprinter is used to running in short bursts over short distances so he needs to adapt to that.

A sports massage therapist will manipulate soft tissue (such as the hamstrings of a sprinter) prior to and after the exercise so that the athlete can experience less muscle tension and pain. Another benefit is that waste products can be eliminated from the body of the athlete, especially via the lymphatic system because of massage. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is lessened through massage as well. In the end, treatment via sports massage allows the athlete to gain better flexibility and posture.

Where can sports massage therapists be employed?

Since sports massage is needed by both recreational and professional athletes, sports jobs like that of sports massage therapists are offered in both recreational and professional sports venues. You can find work in local gyms and community sports centers if you target recreational athletes for your service. If you favor working with professional athletes, you might want to apply with teams affiliated with professional sports organizations. If you get really, really lucky (or just have good networking skills) you might be able to find work with a particular professional sports athlete as part of his personal care team.

What other services does a massage therapist provide?

Aside from massage, a massage therapist might also help the professional athlete with the treatment and management of sports injuries, exercise rehabilitation and therapy, and helping plan the sports nutrition program of the professional athlete.

The advances in the 20th century as far as sports medicine is concerned have helped foster demand for sports massage therapists as one of the more valued sports jobs. Of course, you may need to train for this position before you can be considered by a professional sports organization, but it promises to be a great type of job (if you enjoy working with athletes. )

San Diego California Sports & Business Law Attorney Sebastian Gibson – the Business of Sports

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 17th, 2010

Even if you don’t live in a town with a professional sports team like San Diego, California or Los Angeles, CA, it is likely you still have at least amateur sports teams in almost every city of Orange County, and even if your city just has high school teams in La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista and Escondido or the cities of Huntington Beach, Westminster, Buena Park, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, and Laguna Hills, Santa Barbara, Buena Park, Temecula, Indian Wells, La Quinta, or Palm Springs, you and the players on those teams are probably sports fanatics as we are, and may also have a legal issue in many of the sub-areas of sports law without even knowing it.

Few firms in the U. S. today practice in the field of Sports Business Law. It requires a knowledge of entertainment law, intellectual property, sports brand development, professional regulations, broadcast and media law, sports sponsorship, corporate finance, labor law contract law, merchandising, anti-trust law and litigation. In addition to having knowledge in those fields, it helps to have a strong background in international law, if not English law as well.

Clients at a sports law, law firm are sports team owners, cities, athletes, stadium management companies, and sponsors. You will be dealing with product manufacturers, the media, banks, the USPTO, sports organizations, arbitrators and the courts.

If you are a true sports aficionado, you will wish the business of sport had less to do with the law, but with each passing year it seems to have more rather than less. The rules referees must now live by often makes it useful if they are lawyers in their spare time.

As society becomes more and more concerned with fairness, we see greater use of replays, and less discretion given to the officials to call the game or to correct a mistaken call on their own. Sports teams and their lawyers must constantly be vigilant to protect their trademarks and branding and spend as much time promoting their team and their sport as running the day to day operation. Fortunately, in the end, the time and cost of sports business law attorneys are worth it, with the value of most sport teams rising year after year.

The opportunities to get into sports business law are limited. Many more law students take courses in sports law than will ever have the chance to practice the little they learn in law school.

If you are an athlete, or a business in the sports world and need the assistance of a sports lawyer, call us or visit our website at http://www. californiaattorneyslawyers. com to learn more about how we can assist you. Or call us to speak directly to Sebastian Gibson about your sports law, entertainment law, intellectual property, trademarks, sports brand development, professional regulations, broadcast and media law, sports sponsorships, corporate finance, labor law contract law, merchandising, anti-trust law and litigation.

Sports Facilities Construction: Requires Special Expertise

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 9th, 2010

Special technical expertise is required for sports facilities construction and installation of equipment related to different sports. Different sports facilities require sports pitches to be prepared to different specifications depending upon their use. For instance, sports facilities to be used as Multi-use Games Areas will have to take into consideration the requirements of all the sports to be played on the pitch as compared to single-purpose sports facilities or indoor sports halls.

In case of outdoor sports facilities, the process of construction begins with a site inspection followed by excavation of the ground. The base layers are installed in a way as to offer a stable foundation and to serve as an effective shock pad. Good drainage is one of the most important requirements of these sports pitches.

Synthetic sports surfaces can vary in their playing characteristics depending upon the requirements of the sports to be played on them. This is the reason why artificial turf is available in a range of pile lengths. While shorter pile is meant for sports played at the professional level, longer pile length may be preferred for recreational sports. An expert firm, based on your requirements, can install a 30mm pile or a 20mm pile. The most important thing in this regard is to conform to the I. A. A. F guidelines for installations.

A professional firm, specialised in manufacturing and installing artificial grass, also offers a choice of colours of artificial turf. For instance, you may go for one colour blade artificial pitch to the ones that feature two colour or multi-coloured tufted blade.

Outdoor athletics tracks with artificial surfaces also require the expertise of a professional firm for their construction.   Athletic tracks should be slip resistant so as to minimise chances of falls to athletes. These surfaces, in most cases, are made from an impermeable double compound polyurethane system which allows for better drainage, whilst making the surface uniform and durable. Fibrous rubber granules are blended with polyurethane binders in a special machine. The mixture is then installed at full depth using special equipment.

The construction of indoor sports halls would benefit from a complete design and advisory service with budget proposals. Therefore, services of a professional firm may be sought.   Multi-coloured markings on the sports surface are an integral part of a sports facility used as an indoor sports hall or a Multi-use Games Area, where a variety of sports are played.

Sports facilities construction  not only includes the installation of  sports surfaces, but also other important services such as installation of fences, fixed sports equipment, floodlighting, electronic scoreboards, air supported structures, and much  more. Many leading companies in this field do not only offer the services of sports facilities construction, but also that of sports surface maintenance.

10 Tips for Avoiding Injury During Sports Play

Posted in Uncategorized  by admin on May 9th, 2010

Playing sports is a lot of fun. It’s one of the most exhilarating activities that you can do. Not only is it fun, though; it’s also healthy.

Playing sports can also be a form of body and mind exercise. It can strengthen your muscles and your bones. It also improves your thinking abilities since sports activities hone your mind in matters of strategy and technique.

In fact, playing sports is such a great activity that it can even improve your personality in the aspects of fairness and good sportsmanship. However, that’s not to say that there are no downsides to playing sports.

Playing sports can be quite dangerous especially if you’re inexperienced. If any accidents occur when you’re playing sports, the effects can range from mild to serious. You can either get a minor bruise, a moderately severe sprain, or an injury that you will have to live with for the rest of your life. You might even sustain an injury that could cost you your life. So, it’s quite important to know how to avoid these sports injuries in the first place.

The Proper Gear

The first thing to do when you play sports is to prepare all the equipment that you will need. Your equipment includes not only the balls, the nets and such necessary implements but also your protective equipment.

For example, in football (which is arguably one of the roughest sports) there are a lot of protective gears that you need to put on. The first and probably the most important one is the helmet which is protection for your head or your cranium.

Helmets differ depending on the sport you’re going to play. Football helmets are much bulkier than other helmets. For one thing, football helmets are complete with a face guard and they almost completely cover the head.

There are other protective equipment like ankle guards, shoulder pads, shin guards, mouth guards, and knee caps. All of these are designed to protect the important parts of the body from any injury.

If you participate in football, chances are high that you’ll be falling a lot. All these pads cushion your body whenever you fall or forcibly collide with another player. They therefore help in preventing bone fractures or sprains. Such equipment may be bulky and heavy and they might prevent you from moving freely but, then again, isn’t it always better to be safe than sorry?

Get a Physical

You need to consult with your doctor before you become active in any sports activity. Get a physical exam. This is a precautionary activity that is usually required of professional athletes. It wouldn’t hurt to follow their example even if you only plan on playing football with your weekend buddies.

Warm Ups

Before doing anything strenuous, you have to warm up your body. Some people forgo doing warm-ups because they think that it’s too troublesome; they’re too impatient and want to get into the game the game immediately.

But this shouldn’t be so. Warm-ups are incredibly important because they condition the body for the work-out that it’s going to receive. Also, contrary to what other people think, warm-ups don’t necessarily mean stretching. In fact, stretching should be saved until after you’ve warmed your body up a little since if you stretch yourself too much, you might end up tearing a few ligaments.

The first thing that you should do when you’re warming up is to take a light jog. Then, when you’re done, start stretching your muscles starting from the head down. You can start by rotating your neck, then your shoulders, then your arms, then your waist, your hips, your legs, and then your foot. Sixteen counts on each body part should do.

All in all, warm-ups should last for 15 to 30 minutes. Stretching helps by improving the blood circulation in the said body parts and also by increasing the body’s temperature. That way, once you get into the field, your body will be more than ready to accommodate all the strenuous tasks that it will have to do.

Strength Training and Bodybuilding Exercises

If you want to be in top form when you play, your body must be in top form, too. Aside from giving you the required energy for sports, though, a well-honed body is also more resilient, more flexible and, therefore, less susceptible to sports injuries. Therefore, you should have strength training and regular bodybuilding exercises.

Practice

To avoid sports injuries, you’d do well to be good in your chosen sports. Thus, you’d better practice, practice and practice some more. Of course, do not do this without proper supervision. If no one qualified is there to supervise, no one would be able to tell you whether what you’re doing is right or wrong.

Following Rules

Rules are there for a reason. Usually, they’re qualified into two: rules made for scores or points and rules made for common courtesy. You see, some sports can be dangerous and there are some rules that are put in there for the sake of minimizing injuries and accidents.

Some rules in football that are focused on safety involve the types of blocking and tackling. If you block the opponent by grabbing him by his face mask, then your move will be considered illegal. Also, there’s a rule that prohibits tackling from behind and tackling using the top of your helmet. These rules are made for the official football league but they should also be used in informal games.

Safe Venue

Of course, when you play sports, you have to choose a safe place to play. When you’re playing rough contact sports like football, it’s best if you choose to play on a grass field. It won’t help if you play on concrete because if some accident does happen, falling on the cold, hard concrete will only make the fall harder.

Body Mechanics

When playing sports, you should employ what’s called “body mechanics”. Body mechanics maximizes your body’s potential for movement even as it minimizes the stress that it sustains.

For example, when jumping, make sure to bend or flex your knees to lessen the chance of joint dislocation when you land. Learn all about the techniques that can make falling easier and less severe on your body.

Constant Awareness

Also, when you play sports, you must constantly be aware of what’s happening around you. It won’t help if you’re not cooperating with your teammates.

For example, if two of you are trying to catch the ball, pay attention or you might crash into each other. If someone’s planning to tackle you, try to dodge. Evading is way better than getting hit since the latter leads to injuries.

Muscle Straining

It’s inevitable that your muscles will start to hurt when you play. Muscle pain is oftentimes normal, but that doesn’t mean that you have to ignore it. Never play through the pain because it will aggravate your condition. Take a break when your muscles start hurting. Rest the body part that hurts. It will also help if you elevate it. For example, if your leg is hurting, prop it up on a pillow or two.

It’s perfectly understandable to want to get right back in the game after you’ve sustained an injury especially if it’s an important game. But you have to remember that safety always comes first. If you disregard your injuries, it might get worse and the damage might become irreversible.

Sports are fun and all but that doesn’t mean that you have to give up your body in order to play them. Remember that there are things that are more important in life, like your own safety and wellbeing. Be wise when playing sports, have fun but don’t let it cloud your judgment.
